Missionary photo contest 2020: Cityscape winners
January 2021
What a year we’ve all experienced—and as our missionaries lived through it, many of them documented moments both momentous and mundane. Our SEND Missionary Photo Contest highlights these amazing images. We didn’t have a Cityscapes category when we introduced this year’s photo contest, but these three pictures reminded us that beauty is not limited to untouched landscapes. Indeed, these cityscapes capture places where millions of people have yet to be touched by the love of Christ.

Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour at night
First place: Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong

Photo by Enoch Lam, mobilization officer, East Asia Sending Council

If I want to introduce Hong Kong internationally, I will choose the night view of Victoria Harbour, which expresses the prosperity and dense population of Hong Kong. In the past year, I have been working indoors, whether it is at home or in the office, and the beautiful scenery outside the street has not been appreciated for a long time. The night I took this photo was the longest time I’ve spent enjoying the night view in a whole year.

A lake surrounded by apartments in Ukraine

Second place: Kharkivskyi neighborhood, Kyiv, Ukraine

Photo by Dave Benzel, Bible teacher

The grocery store right in front of our apartment got closed because of a financial dispute with the owner of the building; that meant a much longer walk for us to go to another store. One of our options was to walk around this little lake, surrounded by high-rise buildings. Since I'm so used to seeing buildings everywhere, the water captures my attention every time. Living in a big city constantly teaches me lessons about the New Jerusalem. Though thousands of people live in apartments near this lake, only a select few can see the beauty of the water through their windows. The rest just see more buildings. But some day, in the New Jerusalem, all of us will forever enjoy what we "see out our windows." If we can see beauty in little things here, in spite of all the problems, imagine what it will be like then.

Cherry blossoms blooming in Japan with snow on the ground

Third place: Tokyo, Japan

Photo by Hannah Munnerlyn, transitioning from language school to ministry

The cherry-blossom blooming usually brings forth a large gathering of people in Tokyo, but this year was very different. The cherry blossoms bloomed and no one was there to see it, because of the effects of this pandemic and social distancing becoming a new reality. I paused on my bike ride along the river to take this picture, reflecting on how much change was happening all around me, and yet standing on the truth that the Lord's presence is near and always with me.
