Sophia

Sophia never thought she’d become a missionary, but God called her out from pursuing “the American dream” to reveal his greater plan for her life to make his glory known to the world. In 2009, she left teaching biology and environmental science in the Philadelphia, Penn., area to go to Spain. She served with SEND Spain until 2016, primarily at Evangelical Christian Academy, a school serving missionary kids near Madrid. From experiences in teaching, language classes, playing ice hockey, and university ministry, Sophia grew to see the many natural opportunities available to engage in people’s lives to encourage them toward a real relationship with Jesus Christ.

Sophia’s personal journey and experiences, as an American-born Chinese woman called into full-time ministry, confronted cultural differences and expectations that “people of color” often face in responding to God’s Great Commission. Having ultimately discovered the joy of following Jesus into global mission as a part of his worldwide and eternal family, Sophia shares her unique story, now serving as a Mission Coach with a specific focus on mobilizing people from diverse ethnic groups. She looks forward to seeing God multiply and diversify the workforce sent into his harvest field — followers of Jesus from every tongue, tribe, and nation, to here, beyond, and to the ends of the earth, until the Church reflects fully the vision given in Revelation 7.
