Hi. My name is Matt and this Summer I will be going to Obanazawa, Japan for a three month internship. I first became curious about Japan in 2019 when I discovered Japanese music. I believe that this music was a gift from the Lord as it has helped carry me through a dark depression, the COVID lockdowns, and a year and a half where I battled cancer.
As I learned more about Japanese culture, I was intrigued by it's beauty. As beautiful as Japanese culture is, there is deep brokenness. They have a high suicide rate. A half a million Japanese people have retreated from society and are known as hikikomori. Only 1% of Japanese are Christian. Ministry is not only important in Japan for the Japanese people but for the world. You probably know someone who is fascinated with Japanese culture or anime. This might be you. As Japan continues to export it's culture, revival in Japan would mean that they would be exporting films, music, and anime influenced and inspired by the Gospel.
I will be going to help the ministry team in Obanazawa. I will also be using my time there to discern whether long-term mission work in Japan (over 3 years) will be the future the Lord is calling me into.
