Considering Missions?

Am I Called?

Every Christian has a responsibility and a role to play in making disciples of all nations, whether by going or by sending. God leads people to become missionaries in unique and personal ways, but there are some things you can look for in discerning your part in the Great Commission.

Church Planting among the Unreached

Am I Ready?

As you figure out your role in making disciples among the unreached, consider these questions:

  • How are you growing as a disciple of Jesus?
  • What has given you the greatest feeling of accomplishment in your ministry?
  • When was the last time you shared the gospel with someone and how did you do it?
  • How have you discipled someone one-on-one?
  • What experiences have challenged your faith?
  • How have you developed a heart for unreached peoples?

Am I Financially Fit?

Debt is the biggest financial hurdle you may encounter as you consider missions. But careful planning can help potential missionaries avoid new debt and pay off existing debt. It begins with creating a budget. Chart your monthly income and expenses. Use several months’ worth of numbers to get the most accurate picture. Don’t include income that you can’t be sure you’ll receive.

Evaluate your spending and aim to spend no more than 90% of your income. If your expenses are greater than that, cut the fat! Start by eliminating small but needless costs like frequent coffee runs, eating out often or paying for household chores you could do yourself. A budget calculator can help you find other areas of overspending. Don’t let finances keep you from following God’s call to make disciples of all the nations.

Attend a Conference or Retreat

Explorer Track — a four-day program blended with SEND’s annual conference in July — is designed for those who want to get better acquainted with SEND as a mission and research our ministry opportunities. It can serve as an important step toward becoming a missionary.

A coach will help you navigate the conference. You can attend group sessions to help you in your research, plus meet with missionaries and leaders from the specific fields and ministries you’re interested in. You will get a feel for SEND’s personality and people and our heart for making disciples among unreached peoples. Your children can also participate in the children’s programs.

To attend, you must have filled out a Get Started form and be recommended to attend by a SEND missions coach or missionary. You must be actively researching long-term missions and have SEND on your short list of possible missions organizations.
