Inviting the Next Generation into Missions
March 2023

By Brooke Nagel, a SEND missionary in Spain | Europe

I could hear her voice cracking from trying to hold back the tears as she expressed how excited she was that I would consider her to help with videos for Misión Posible (Mission Possible - MP), a conference I help organize.

She said, "I have been praying for several years that God would show me how I could possibly serve him using my passion for film and creating videos, but it has been so difficult. Thank you for considering me and asking me to participate, I would LOVE to!”

That is how my relationship with Irene started in early 2021. I sent her a message one day asking if she would be interested in serving and helping us with videos for MP. I had heard her name and knew she was involved in the youth group at our church and was talented in making videos, so when we were thinking of staff for MP I put her name out there.

During the following year, Irene started to stay at my house when she would come to Madrid for the weekend, since she studied in another town about an hour away. We worked together to create a booklet for MP as well as promotional videos. I started to get to know her more on a personal level and, as we would make coffee in the mornings she was at my house, we would have conversations about friendships, school, and life.

Fast forward to MP 2022, and we had several youth working together to film all day and edit all night to create our daily recap videos. It was so cool to be able to see young people connect and get excited to serve God with their talents in filmmaking!

One night while talking with Irene in our room, I asked if she would be interested in going on a mission trip to Albania with me during the summer. Her eyes lit up! I also asked if she would bring her camera to help us make a video of the trip and she immediately texted her parents with excitement.

When our team for the trip to Albania sat down at a table to meet for the first time, the leader of the trip asked us to go around the table and introduce ourselves and why we had decided to go on the trip. We were a group of nine people from all over Spain, including three young Spanish youths.

First girl: “I signed up for the trip because Brooke shared about missions during Misión Posible and God put it on my heart to go.”

Second girl: “My dad is the leader of the trip. I had not considered going until a few months ago. Brooke texted me and asked if I was going on the mission trip, so I decided to sign up.”

Third girl (Irene): “I have been wanting to go on a mission trip for a while and Brooke encouraged me to go on this trip. I will hopefully also be able to create a little film of the trip.”

My eyes started to fill up with tears as each girl spoke, and the other people looked at me in somewhat of a shock. I had no idea that I had influenced the other youth to come on the trip, and it is not often I am blessed with the opportunity to see the fruit of all the work and time I invest in Spanish youth.

After the meeting, I simply praised God for his faithfulness and gave thanks for the opportunity to experience this mission trip alongside these Spanish youth. I had been praying for a year that Spanish youth would attend this trip and God was beyond faithful.
