Hello, my name is Owen Rehling and I am a short-term missionary serving with SEND in Obanazawa, Japan.
My story with missions began in college. God had put it on my heart to follow his great commission in the international field through my campus ministry’s annual China trip. This, however, was scheduled to take place in the summer of 2020 in the city of Wuhan. The global pandemic put a damper on my immediate plans but left me with a strong desire to follow the Lord’s preparations, After graduating, I met a missionary couple who were being sent out through SEND from my home church, Cityview Community Church in Elmhurst, Illinois. I told them about my search for a new goal. Our conversation led me back to a trip I had taken to Yamaguchi when I was in Boy Scouts and my path became clear. My experience in and love for Japan would be used to glorify the name of Christ.
As a short-term missionary, I will be interning with a missionary family that already operates a discipleship house in Japan. I will be studying with them on how to be a better evangelist, engaging in different forms of outreach ministry, and learn how the gospel can thrive in the Japanese context. This will be a time of serious study and spiritual growth for myself. I want to untether myself from my current job and my comfort zone so that I may see how God grows me when I am dedicating all of my time to his mission. I will be keeping a strong schedule for studying scripture and theology. My prayer life, meditations, and personal evangelism will also be further developed during my service.
Consider following my mission and praying for Japan. This is a country still in great need to hear the gospel. Pray for my host family and that their mission would grow and thrive as long-term servants. Pray for me, that I may grow to become the good and faithful servant that God needs me to be both abroad and at home. Pray that all of our efforts point others to Jesus Christ and the kingdom of heaven.
