SEND’s Ministry

We proclaim Christ through personal evangelism, Bible studies, conversational English classes, cooking classes, concerts, camping, and youth outreach. We make disciples in all our ministries with the aim of starting and building up churches that reproduce.

We are working in cooperation with Japanese churches in two main geographic areas: the region around Tokyo (Kanto), and the northeast region (Tohoku) that was hit by the tsunami disaster in March 2011.

Spiritual Climate

While Shintoism and Buddhism are the major religions in Japan, Japanese people are also gripped by materialism, ancestor worship, and group conformity. Most consider Christianity a good, but irrelevant, foreign religion and firmly resist the call to follow Christ.

Team Goals

In the next five years, SEND Japan will:

  • Begin actively engaging in the startup of five new reproducing churches in the Kanto region by 2030. We will cooperate with existing churches and deploy 30 SEND disciple-makers to this initiative.
  • Engage people in the prefecture of Fukushima (one of the disaster-stricken zones from 2011) to bring the hope of Christ in word and action.
  • Concentrate on discipleship in all our ministries.
  • Develop a full program for 1- to 2-year missionary workers.
  • Complete the second phase of the “Next Generation for Christ” project at Okutama Bible Chalet to develop new outreach and discipleship programs, build a new dining hall, and increase staff.
Would you be a good fit for this team?

Japan is a mission field where fruit is not seen immediately. Missionary candidates desiring to work in Japan should be men and women who are patient and able to engage people in long-term relationships. They should be flexible and willing to adapt their thinking to a very different culture. And they must be able to persevere in learning the Japanese language and culture throughout their years in Japan.
